As expected, efficiency and costs are among the reasons that both telcos are considering the option to share their 5G infrastructure. According to the joint announcement, TM and U Mobile already looking at several well-known 5G network sharing models including Multi-Operator Core Node (MOCN) and Multi-Operator Radio Access Network (MORAN).
Prior to today’s announcement, Digi have also signed up with TM to test 5G network sharing in Langkawi throughout the 5GDP period. Not to forget, Maxis and Celcom have also demonstrated the capabilities of their shared 5G infrastructure in Langkawi which apparently able to deliver peak speed of around 1.1Gbps. Furthermore, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have also announced that it will be awarding the pioneer 5G spectrum of 700MHz and 3.5GHz to a consortium of multiple companies instead of individual telcos. Hence, expect more 5G-related industry collaborations to pop up very soon.
