One of the slides by Samsung shown during a presentation displays the difference in system boot and game launch times among storage mediums. This involves the traditional HDD, SATA SSDs and the “optimised NVMe” SSDs. Naturally, they go from slowest to fastest in that same order. But what’s interesting is that the text at the top left corner reads “SSD era in game console 2020”.
The slides seem to stack up with the way devs describe the significance of the SSD on next-gen consoles. That said, while this may suggest that Samsung is involved in supplying them, it’s not exactly definitive proof. And if the next generation consoled will indeed be using NVMe SSDs, it really questions the possibility of the PlayStation 5 using a 2TB one, considering its price. At any rate, it’s probably best to take this bit of information with a pinch of salt. Samsung only said during the presentation that NVMe SSDs will be found in game consoles in the year 2020. We should probably leave it at that until the company reveals more about its involvement with the two console makers. (Source: PC World via Video Games Chronicle)
