OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei posted in its forum to clarify this, following its teaser video. The video in question involves the line “Water resistant ratings for phones cost you money” followed by the depiction of a phone being dunked into a bucket of water. All in all, it’s a fair point to make. Getting an IP rating will cost money, and it’s customers who will have to bear it in the end. But on the flip side, if the OnePlus 7 Pro will have a price comparable to other flagship devices, then the lack of an IP rating in turn means that it has one less feature compared to the other flagships for a similar price. Also, Pei made sure to warn OnePlus customers from doing their own tests and dunking phones into buckets of water. Alongside stating that there’s still a chance for IP ratings for future OnePlus phones, he made the important point that even IP-rated phones’ warranty doesn’t cover water damage.
