Starting in November, Basic plan subscribers will be able to view their content at 720p HD resolution. This upgrade is being implemented as part of the Basic with Ads plan rollout in twelve selected markets even though Malaysia is not part of the list. Prior to this, subscribers of the Basic are limited to the 480p SD resolution. When the service was launched in Malaysia six years ago, the Basic plan costs RM33 per month but the fee was then increased to RM35 in January 2020 which remains the same until today. The 480p SD resolution limit was also imposed on the Mobile plan which is a special tier made exclusively for smartphones and tablets. Netflix did trial a plan called Mobile+ in Malaysia last year which offers 1080p Full HD resolution viewing on smartphones, tablets, and PC but it has not been made as part of the service’s official offerings until today. Meanwhile, the resolution upgrade for the Basic plan will bring no changes to the pricing of the Basic plan in Malaysia as noted earlier. The other parts of the plan remain the same too including viewing and download quota of one device at a time. As a comparison, the Basic plan costs RM10 less than the service’s Standard plan which provides content in 1080p Full HD resolution. On the other hand, the Premium plan which costs an additional RM20 allows one to watch Netflix content in 4K resolution and also includes support for HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
