The news first broke courtesy of THR: Marvel is developing a live-action series for Disney+, its upcoming streaming service, based on its acclaimed comic Ms. Marvel, hiring British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner. Later, it was confirmed during a D23 panel that the character will indeed be part of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and will crossover into other movies in the universe.
The hiring of Bisha K. Ali is particularly interesting. While she doesn’t have a stacked resume in film and television — she’s one of the staff writers on Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral remake — she’s known for her political stand-up comedy and also appearances on the Guilty Feminist podcast. While I’m not too familiar with her work, she does appear to be the right person to write a live-action series on Marvel’s first Brown-skinned female, Muslim superhero. In the comics, Kamala Khan AKA Ms. Marvel is a Pakistani-American who’s a big fan of Captain Marvel. One day, the teenage Kamala Khan who had just disobeyed her parents, found herself in a Terrigen cocoon. In it, she was asked to wish for anything she wanted. Naturally, she wished to be just like her idol — Captain Marvel. Kamala was given polymorphic powers that allowed her to change her body into anything. She also has accelerated healing powers. We still have no information in regards to the release date of Ms. Marvel.
