The Star reports that up to 80% of streetlamps is Malaysia currently use other forms of lighting. Switching them all to LEDs will lead to savings of “about 50% from current energy expenses,” according to Zuraida. In addition to LED streetlamps, the ministry is also looking to have signages on shops and buildings changed to LEDs as well.
Beyond LED lighting, Zuraida also said that the ministry is looking into installing CCTV cameras at selected points in the country. She hopes that these will not only deter crime but also help in preventing people from littering. A pilot project for all these will first take place in Ampang, Zuraida’s constituency. Specifically for the LED lighting, the pilot project will span three months, and the tender process for contractors to conduct this project will be completed in June. (Source: The Star. Image: TNB)
