Weighing at only 145g, the Canon PowerShot Zoom is designed to be operated with one hand. You’ll find most of its interface just under its electronic viewfinder (EVF), which includes a photo button, record button and a dial for zooming in and out. Along with the camera is a wrist strap attachment to make sure that you won’t accidentally drop the device. Inside the Zoom is a 12.1MP 1/3-inch CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor, which allows it to capture high resolution photos and also FHD videos at 1080p. The monocular camera also features Face Detection autofocus, a maximum ISO of 3200, built-in stabilisation, and a 100-400mm equivalent optical lens. The latter allows for an additional 2x zoom to 800mm digitally as well.
In terms of connectivity, the new camera features Bluetooth and WiFi support which allows you to pair it with a smartphone to review captured photos or videos. It also includes a microSDXC card slot, and a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. Unfortunately, Canon did not detail the Zoom’s battery capacity.
Another interesting tidbit is that the Canon PowerShot Zoom is actually the second device from the company that was developed with crowdfunding aid. The first being the Canon Ivy Rec camera last year. In the Zoom’s case, it managed to reach its USD280,000 goal in just 13 hours after its debut.
